October 2026 | Dakar, Senegal

As part of its ongoing international efforts to promote human rights and defend fundamental freedoms, the Belgian Association for Human Rights and Development (BAMRO) is participating in the 89th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), held in Dakar, Senegal, from 12 to 21 October 2026.

This participation reflects BAMRO’s commitment to strengthening international human rights cooperation and highlighting the challenges facing human rights protection across the African continent.

Significance of the 89th Ordinary Session

The session provides an important regional platform for discussing the human rights situation in Africa and addressing major legal and humanitarian challenges, including armed conflicts, forced displacement, civilian protection, women's and children's rights, the rule of law, and accountability.

The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights is a key human rights mechanism within the African Union system, responsible for promoting and protecting the rights enshrined in the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

Objectives of BAMRO’s Participation

Through its participation, BAMRO aims to:

  1. Monitor discussions and developments concerning human rights across Africa.

  2. Highlight humanitarian and human rights challenges arising from armed conflicts, displacement, and violations against civilians.

  3. Strengthen communication and exchange expertise with African and international human rights organizations.

  4. Support efforts to promote accountability and combat impunity.

  5. Benefit from African experiences and mechanisms to further develop human rights advocacy and international cooperation.

Expected Outcomes

BAMRO expects this participation to contribute to expanding its network of partnerships with African human rights institutions and strengthening opportunities for cooperation in monitoring, documentation, and advocacy.

The session also offers an opportunity to promote dialogue between European and African civil society organizations and exchange experiences related to human rights protection, particularly in conflict-affected regions.

Continued Commitment to Human Rights

BAMRO reaffirms that its participation in regional and international human rights forums reflects its belief in collective action, institutional cooperation, and the importance of translating legal principles and international commitments into practical measures that protect human dignity.

The organization remains committed to promoting human rights awareness, strengthening international cooperation, and advocating for a world in which human rights are respected without discrimination.
