UN Warns of Humanitarian Crisis in Taiz: 800,000 Without Aid

Taiz issues a distress call: more than 800,000 people have lost access to humanitarian assistance.

When roads are closed to food, water, and medicine, civilians face fear and hunger every day.

During a United Nations press briefing on 23 October 2026, the World Food Programme (WFP) reported that more than 800,000 people in Taiz were unable to access humanitarian assistance.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) stated that water production in the city had fallen by approximately half, while the cost of water delivered by tanker trucks had nearly tripled.

UNICEF reported that screenings conducted this year in Taiz identified acute malnutrition among more than 52,000 children, including over 11,500 suffering from severe acute malnutrition.

These are not merely statistics. They represent children in need of medical care, families searching for water, and civilians who deserve to live in safety.

Protecting civilians requires urgent action to facilitate humanitarian access, secure supply routes, protect water and healthcare infrastructure, and guarantee safe passage for those wishing to leave the area.

Access to water, food, and medicine is a fundamental human necessity and must never be used as a means of pressure in conflict.
